This 2-story brick home was originally built in 1994 and is in a golf course community in Cary, North Carolina. “Like many homes built in the mid-to-late 90s, this home had great bones but was ready for a refresh to reflect the new homeowner’s personality and lifestyle,” Liz Goldberg, founder of CAROLYNLEONA says.

“Our client is the coolest and smartest data scientist and art collector—who happens to wear the best blue jeans—moved to North Carolina from California to be closer to family during the pandemic,” Liz tells us. “Our initial consultation was immediately after she moved in; we saw all the moving boxes before they settled in and happily accepted the challenge to dream up a new plan for our client and her two sons.”

The goal was to create a beautiful, cozy home—a place where she could raise her sons, with places to hang out, do homework, read, and entertain friends and family from day to evening. Liz’s design firm relied on a palette of natural tones and earthy neutrals. Deep greens, terracotta, golden yellow, and rich blues move throughout room to room. The living and dining room took on a moody feel, while the breakfast nook and family room were centered around the family with durable, comfortable pieces. “Throughout all the spaces we designed, we paired wood tones with clean lines and antique pieces to blend old meets new in an updated, fresh and unexpected way,” Liz says.

The home’s original style was a touch too traditional for the client, so the CAROLYNLEONA team set out to update these details in a modern way. “We achieved this by using several different wall treatments like paint, wallpaper, and shiplap,” Liz explains. “We also replaced old carpeting with new hardwoods, matching the originals and a new carpet runner for durability with young kids and a new puppy. Our client was patient with the timeframe of her project during the pandemic, as our industry was experiencing the longest delays in history!”

From the start of the design process to installation, it took 16 months. “The client is thrilled with the designs; she said she has received so many compliments from friends and family on her new home and how perfectly it reflects her style and personality,” Liz concludes.
