Originally built in 1954, this Swiss-inspired, mid-century modern home is nestled in the heart of Dundas, Ontario’s picturesque heritage district. “The two-story residence sits on an exceptionally large, forested lot complete with a meandering stream and its own walking path—a truly rare find,” says Laurie Sprague of Sprague Interiors. “What I find most captivating about this neighborhood is its charm: tree-lined streets, lovingly preserved historic homes, and inviting front porches that speak to a sense of community and care. Just a short stroll away is a beautiful park, perfect for dog walks or quiet afternoon picnics, and the vibrant downtown core—with its cozy cafes, local boutiques, and welcoming atmosphere—is within easy walking distance. It’s no surprise our clients chose this location as the setting for their retirement. The lifestyle here is effortless, connected, and serene—an ideal place to slow down and be closer to family.”

The couple shares the home with their beloved dog, and Laurie says they were a joy to work with on the renovation. “I try not to play favorites, but I have to admit these two were among the kindest and most trusting clients I’ve ever had the pleasure of collaborating with,” Laurie says with a big smile. “From our very first in-person meeting, it was clear that our styles and sensibilities were beautifully aligned, which set the tone for a truly seamless process.”

The scope of work encompassed a full home renovation across all three levels of the house, with the most significant structural transformation taking place on the upper floor. “There, we reconfigured the layout almost entirely, relocating walls to create a more intuitive flow and thoughtful use of space,” the designer explains. “Every room in the home received attention, from the four updated bathrooms to a brand-new kitchen and pantry.” They also introduced all-new flooring, lighting, tilework, windows, and doors, along with select exterior upgrades, including a reimagined deck and refreshed landscaping. “In addition to the architectural and material elements, we curated custom furniture and decor for several key spaces, including the living room, kitchen, and principal bedroom, to ensure a cohesive, personal, and beautifully finished result,” Laurie tells us.

The couple wanted the home to reflect their love of nature and travel, two themes that Laurie wove throughout the design. “The home’s style is relaxed, organic, and eclectic,” she explains. “Layered with character, but always warm and inviting rather than overly polished or precious.” The overarching goal was to honor that spirit while introducing thoughtful updates that felt true to the home’s original mid-century roots. “Key elements like the staircase were reimagined with care, and we made a point of preserving standout features such as the original terrazzo flooring in the entryway and the existing fireplace—both of which anchor the space with a sense of history and authenticity,” Laurie adds.

The project took a year to design and complete. “Our clients were absolutely delighted with the finished space,” the designer shares. “During the reveal, they were genuinely moved by the thoughtful, nuanced details woven throughout the design—those subtle touches that invite discovery and bring a home to life. They shared that they could never have imagined creating a space like this without our team’s guidance, which was incredibly rewarding to hear. Most meaningful of all, they described the home as warm and cozy. For me, that’s the highest compliment—because no matter how beautiful a space may be, it should always feel deeply comfortable and personal to the people living in it.”
