This classic Northeast home is in Milton, Massachusetts—a highly desirable suburb on the outskirts of Boston. “Known for its urban bent and close proximity to the city, it’s the perfect location for families wanting to take advantage of all that Boston offers,” says Ashley Garelick. Ashley is one half of Undone Home, the design firm she runs with Chris McGinty.

“Our clients are empty nesters with a large extended family and grown children who live locally and visit often,” Chris explains. “The main request was to make the kitchen, dining and sitting areas cohesive for entertaining family and friends.”

The kitchen was completely gutted and entirely reconfigured, which included removing a wall for added square footage and increased natural light.

The pair says the style of the home is clean and traditional—but with a signature Undone Home relaxed, welcoming vibe. “We made it a point to add warm earthy wood tones and deep accent colors,” Ashley shares. “Blackened metal accents with white oak and deep charcoal cabinets provide just enough contrast and interest.” For added whimsy, a bold art piece by Eric Stefanski holds court at the breakfast nook, and there’s no shortage of seating with two white oak tables and counter stools at the kitchen island.

“There are so many things to love about this space,” Chris says with a smile. “The oversized island painted Wrought Iron by Benjamin Moore, the earthy Taj Mahal counters and our favorite, the large awning windows over the breakfast nook, which makes for a toasty corner for an afternoon nap.”

The designers say the biggest challenge was reconfiguring the space to make it “live bigger” in order to accommodate lots of family and friends. “Knocking down a wall and moving the workspace to an adjacent wall really opened up the space and gave more room for storage as well as people,” Ashley explains.

The project took approximately six months, and the family is thrilled with the outcome. It’s perfectly aligned with an Undone Home project—a space with soul that people want to live in year-round.
