Though it’s quite rural, Loomis, California has it all. “Loomis is just 90 minutes from Lake Tahoe and Squaw Valley Ski Resort, and about 90 minutes from San Francisco,” says interior designer Johnna Martin of J Studios. “I love that you can be on the ski slopes in one direction or in the city in the other direction. Folsom Lake, with boat recreation, is 5 minutes away and is the perfect escape from the heat and ideal for family time in the summers. The estate neighborhood has vineyards and horses, whatever your passion!”

This home, belonging to a busy family of six and longtime J. Studios clients, was designed to celebrate its Loomis locale. “We designed their lake house at Lake Winnipesaukee in New Hampshire before their primary residence in California,” she explains. “They love the rural, country vibe and wanted the home to feel eclectic, curated, and reflect its environment. The wife loved the history of the Gold Rush, cowboys, and coal miners—so we incorporated the history of Sacramento and the American river through art and vintage accessories.”

Johnna says that the family’s top request was to make each room interesting and unexpected. “Nothing needed to ‘match,’ which was really fun! The home had to be funky enough to feel unique, but classic enough to feel timeless and comfortable.” While they loved the large great room, the clients requested a more intimate seating area off the kitchen island. “We created two seating groups in this room,” the designer explains. “We also created a large built-in banquette for the family to have plenty of room to gather for their ritual of Sunday family dinners.”

The designer admits that the biggest hurdle was minimizing the scope due to budget. “We had designed a much more extensive remodel but had to scale it down to stay within their desired budget,” she recalls. “The project took about 16 months from start to finish, and the client was thrilled.  She said it was everything she had envisioned and more – capturing her personality and taste in every room.”
