Known for its high elevations and hilltop views, San Mateo, California is a coveted enclave in the Bay Area. “This1920s Spanish Colonial home is on Parrott Drive,” explains designer Soleil Maxwell of Maxwell Design. “The area dates back to the 1870s, and the street is gorgeous—windy, tree-lined, with large lots and other historical homes.”
For the homeowners, this property holds deep sentimental value. “Our client was raised here, and later raised her own children within these walls,” she explains, adding that they became empty nesters in 2024. “It was super important to them to honor the history and architecture of the home and retain as many original finishes as possible. From the original architectural details and lighting to a thoughtfully curated color palette inspired by the stunning hand-painted ceilings, every detail honors the home’s history.”
Soleil was tasked with sourcing furnishings—both soft and hard—for the living, dining, kitchen, entry, and primary bedroom, while the homeowners took the lead on the finish selections for the bathrooms. “I consulted closely along the way,” the designer says. “As you can imagine, they were very collaborative in all aspects because they truly cared about the outcome–the best type of clients! Together, we revised the primary suite floorplan, improving the footprint of their walk-in closet and their primary bathroom. We went through many interactions and landed with a really good solution accommodating all of their needs—double sinks, a vanity and make-up area, and an extra-large tub for soaking.”
For furnishings, the couple envisioned a space that was both elegant and functional—something inviting enough for everyday use yet refined enough for family gatherings. “Prior to the remodel, the living room was not used daily–only for special occasions and did not accommodate everyone,” Soleil explains. “Now, on special occasions, everyone can sit comfortably and enjoy their time together. It’s a large room, so selecting pieces that filled the space while also making it feel warm and inviting was important.”
The designer says that the furnishings seamlessly blend vintage charm with modern comfort. “Soft, textured fabrics, vintage-inspired rugs, and luxurious marble come together to create a layered, warm environment—one that beautifully transitions from daily living to grand celebrations,” she reflects.
Thanks to the care of Maxwell Design, their vision came to life and then some. The project took about a year—and the enthusiastic reaction was “Is this really my house!?”
