For a close-knit family of six—including four home-schooled children—finding the perfect home meant honoring their daily rhythms and cherished rituals. “As active members of their community, it was equally important to them that their home feel open and inviting—a true gathering place for friends and loved ones,” says interior designer Susana Goss.
They discovered their dream home just 15 minutes from Raleigh, North Carolina. “This fully renovated Southern estate sits on a tranquil lake just south of downtown,” Susana explains. “It feels like a world away from the city’s hustle and bustle. A long brick driveway welcomes you, encouraging a slower pace as you approach. At the front door, the lake view opens up, instantly evoking a sense of peace and calm.”
Susana’s eponymous design studio led the interior design, working alongside Dixon Kirby for the architectural design and build. The style is best described as “New Traditional.” “It’s rooted in classic elements but curated with a youthful, collected sensibility,” Susana explains.
The biggest challenge during the renovation was crafting a functional, cohesive layout for the expansive open-plan living, dining, and kitchen space. “With so many distinct elements sharing one area, it was essential to strike the right balance—creating zones that felt intentional yet seamlessly connected, while also supporting the comfort and practicality needed for everyday family life,” the designer recalls.
The project spanned a year and a half, and Susana credits close collaboration with the design/build team for its success. “A unified approach created a smooth experience for the clients,” she shares. “The result is a home that feels timeless—like it’s always been there. The clients were overjoyed with the final outcome; they felt an immediate connection to the space, noting its sense of history, warmth, and lasting beauty.”
