For the renovation of this North Arlington, Virginia home, designer Sara Swabb of Storie Collective had a clear objective. “Accessibility was our top priority,” she says. “The client was looking for a home that needed mostly cosmetic upgrades but was built with an elevator to all levels and had large enough rooms and walkways to accommodate a wheelchair. The result is a space that is not only beautiful and cohesive but also fully functional for the entire family—knowing that they can comfortably enjoy their home as designed is the most rewarding outcome.”

The property was built in 2005 in North Arlington’s Country Club Hills neighborhood and features five bedrooms and five and a half baths. “The area is known for its tree-lined streets, beautifully maintained homes, and a strong sense of community. It offers a rare balance of privacy and convenience—tucked away in a quiet, residential setting yet just minutes from D.C.,” she explains. “The charm of the neighborhood, with its classic architecture and lush landscapes, makes it an ideal place to create a home that feels both timeless and welcoming.”

The kitchen was a top priority for the clients, ensuring both homeowners could cook and clean up. “So much independence was gained here,” Sara says of the design. “The redesigned kitchen by Unique Kitchens & Baths features our cabinetry collaboration and includes a lowered side of the island that caters to the client’s lifestyle.” In this space, bold marble countertops and a custom hood surround bring softness and elegance, a stunning touch that elevates the design. Sara continues, “Working with Unique Kitchens & Baths is always a seamless experience. Tanya and her team bring a level of craftsmanship and attention to detail that is invaluable, especially in a project where function and beauty must go hand in hand. Their cabinetry was fully customized for accessibility, and their expertise ensured that we didn’t have to compromise style for practicality. The result feels intentional, elegant, and completely tailored to the homeowners’ needs.”

Throughout the home, strong raw wood and metal elements, rich tones, hand-formed details, and modern accents create a refined yet relaxed atmosphere. “Well-appointed dining, living, and family rooms infuse dimension and texture into the home, helping a new space feel collected and lived in,” Sara explains. “In the primary bathroom, a custom-built iron vanity and natural stone tile add interest and movement to the neutral space. Unexpected lighting in the primary bedroom keeps things modern and playful, balancing the traditional furnishing selections.”

The project took approximately one year from start to finish. “When the clients saw the completed home, they were overwhelmed—in the best way,” the designer says with a smile. “Seeing a space that was not only visually stunning but also deeply functional for their lifestyle made it all the more meaningful. Their excitement and relief, knowing they could fully enjoy their home with ease, was incredibly rewarding.”
