This Muskoka cottage is a 1950s Pan-Abode design that has been thoughtfully restored and expanded, preserving the character of its original architecture while introducing a contemporary sensibility. Though it feels decidedly rustic, it’s a refined interpretation of the Canadian cottage vernacular, where natural materials meet modern design.
“Set within the rugged landscape of Muskoka, the cottage feels deeply connected to its setting,” says interior designer Lisa Worth. “Towering trees, raw natural beauty, and abundant wildlife create an atmosphere that is both peaceful and quintessentially Canadian—where it’s not uncommon to catch sight of deer frolicking through the nearby woods.”
Lisa’s clients are empty nesters who spend their summers and falls in Canada. “The homeowners wanted to reimagine their Muskoka retreat for a growing extended family,” Lisa explains. “The original cottage had served them well, but its intimate footprint no longer accommodated the way they lived and gathered.”
The vision was to create a more generous retreat, with additional spaces for family and friends to gather, as well as a private principal suite that would remain connected to the original cottage while offering a sense of quiet separation. With its modern architecture and rugged Muskoka landscape, the home had the potential to feel strong and decidedly masculine. Lisa’s challenge was to balance those qualities with softness and warmth, creating interiors that felt inviting, layered, and effortlessly comfortable.
“Architecturally, the additions take a distinctly modern direction,” the designer notes. “Rather than attempting to make the new spaces identical, the design allows each to retain its own identity while establishing a strong visual dialogue between old and new. Material continuity became the thread and the connection.”
The original cottage flooring extends seamlessly into the additions, creating a subtle sense of cohesion and flow. “The result is a layered relationship between contrasting architectural expressions—modern and nostalgic—unified by a considered material palette,” Lisa shares.
The project was completed in just one year, and the homeowners couldn’t be happier with the result. “Our design team improved upon the original, creating a beautiful, peaceful atmosphere specifically for how we use the home, while blending naturally into the environment,” they tell us. “They allowed us to see the forest for the trees with elegance while retaining a sense of humility about our place in the surroundings.”
