“I think that the best way to describe this style is California rustic modern,” Julia Miller of Yond Interiors says. “We incorporated oodles of natural materials and that classic California palette of neutral and natural colors.” The single-level property happens to sit on a 1.5-acre lot that could accommodate horses or even a small vineyard. “The home was appealing to our clients since there was so much land and opportunity to create an outdoor oasis and close to family,” she says. Naturally, the ranch nature of the property is what influenced the design choices and material selections.

The clients are creatives in the photography and film industry, as well as musicians. “They also have a lovely little company that offers smaller, in-home concerts for private parties,” Julia smiles. “They have two small children and love hosting their family and friends. We designed the living room around their piano and took into account all of the acoustics and how to best facilitate in-home concerts.”

Though the design process was done at a distance (and began at the start of the pandemic), Julia says it was a testament to the power of collaboration. “It could have been a curse but instead it turned into the greatest collaboration with the homeowner and trades,” she smiles. “Of course, we had supply chain issues, challenges with Covid-related worksite restrictions, and concerns about keeping everyone safe and healthy as the project moved forward but all was worked out. The project certainly took longer than anticipated and there were a few hiccups but overall, we were able to manage the project quite easily. There were many shared Google documents, FaceTime calls, and text messages as the project moved forward.”
