How we present ourselves to the world defines our sense of self. The clothes we wear, the way we style our hair, even the scent of perfume we leave behind defines our signature sense of self—and, in turn, how we are perceived.

But I think our homes are our ultimate self-portrait. They reflect our truest selves—who we are in the quiet moments alone, when we fling open the doors for a last-minute dinner party or a well-planned soirée, or when we ready the guest room for a weekend with our long-distance bestie.

That connection between fashion and interiors has always fascinated me. On a recent trip to Manhattan during Fashion Week, several chic New Yorkers caught my eye with their incredible sense of style. “What must their closets look like?” I wondered, before the thought quickly drifted to, “Actually, what does the rest of their place look like?”

This issue is particularly exciting because, page after page, it captures exactly those kinds of homes—and homeowners—you can’t help but be curious about. For starters, check out the Oklahoma City loft of an up-and-coming designer (page 36), the Nashville residence of an aspiring songwriter (page 44), and the charming Connecticut kitchen of a design editor and photo stylist (page 42).

One standout is the candy-colored world of designer (and major design influencer) Cara Woodhouse, whose Sag Harbor home is pure joy on every surface (page 50). Here, her imagination runs wild with color, pattern, and clever details that beg for a second look.

As you flip through the pages, you may feel inspired to take a more personal approach to your own space. Look no further than American design icon Nate Berkus, who is celebrating an illustrious 30-year career. In my interview with him (page 46), he shares an exclusive look inside his new book and offers his thoughtful perspective on the true meaning of home.

After all, style isn’t about perfection; it’s about the courage to live beautifully—in your own way, in your own space.
