Designer Hema Persad of Sagrada Studio drew on a global perspective—and a balance of light and depth—for the redo of this Los Angeles bathroom. “Our clients are newlyweds—they got married during the renovation process,” she says. He owns a beverage company, and she works in her family’s fashion business. They are young and very well-traveled, both for business and pleasure: Her business is based in China, and they were married just outside of Mexico City.
Hema was tasked with bringing their vibrant, worldly aesthetic into a century-old Spanish-style home. “I try to nickname our projects at Sagrada Studio or at least give the whole project a ‘North Star’ in terms of style,” she says. “Here it was California Spanish, so it had to feel in keeping with the style of the home but also reflect our lifestyle in L.A., which is very relaxed, nothing too formal, and always (whether we like it or not) some hint of mid-century somewhere.”
While most of the home’s living spaces lean light and airy, Hema introduced shadow and texture through an eclectic mix of mid-century and vintage pieces, paired with signature Spanish-style details—plaster walls, carved moldings, and handcrafted finishes. “If you nail down the home’s personality before you start, you’ll keep cohesion throughout each space,” the designer says.
The client admitted she wasn’t into wallpaper, but she loved dramatic stone, so Hema tried to work in many different types throughout each space. “There are 4 or 5 different types of quartzite and marble here,” she tells us. “They wanted to entertain and they wanted to bring the Spanish character back to match the architecture of the home, and they wanted to finish before their wedding so they could move in right after they got married.”
Hema and her team met the challenge with ease. “We did this in about 4 months,” she shares. “Largely this worked because we didn’t have to move anything around and we kept the original flooring the living spaces.” The result is an immersive, moody retreat shaped by opposites—luminous yet grounded, worldly yet unmistakably Californian.
