This charming 1939 brick home is nestled in the heart of Media, Pennsylvania. Though it was extensively remodeled in 2003, the new homeowners were ready for a refresh that honored the home’s history. Enter Vestige Home: a Philadelphia-based design firm led by Nicole Cole.

“The neighborhood radiates timeless charm, with tree-lined streets and character-filled homes,” Nicole tells us. “With original details such as rich wood paneling and intricate ceilings, the house already had a strong historic foundation. The clients wanted to enhance their beloved home with designs for their first-floor powder room, mudroom, and a primary suite that felt true to the home’s past while meeting the demands of their busy family.”

The original primary suite, though spacious, lacked the functionality and personality the clients envisioned. “They wanted a space that felt relaxed, serene, calm, adult, elegant, and luxurious,” Nicole explains. “A retreat to unwind at the end of a long day—and a place to wake up feeling ready to tackle life. It was truly a blank slate—they had been sleeping on just a mattress for the past year—and they were eager to create a serene, personal space with beautiful furnishings and plenty of storage.”

The suite includes a bedroom, dressing room, and bathroom. Throughout the expansive space, the original hardwood floors were restored, honoring the home’s character. Panel molding and custom millwork were added to introduce architectural interest and elevate the aesthetic. A comfortable upholstered bed in a blue, tapestry-inspired fabric, generous nightstands, and modern bedside lighting create contrast with traditional details. Layers of window treatments—a mix of woven wood Roman shades and curtain panels—add texture, while a plush, high-pile wool rug enhances the feeling of luxury.

Since the small closets lacked adequate storage, custom millwork was introduced. “Inspired by built-in armoires, we incorporated secret doors with push-to-open hardware that seamlessly blend with the panel molding. It was a fun new challenge that required close collaboration with our millwork partner to ensure the best technical outcome,” Nicole shares. A soft, forest-inspired wallpaper now wraps the walls.

In the bathroom, Nicole says the original layout only needed aesthetic improvements. “We created a large, decorative alcove for the tub, adding coziness and a strong focal point,” she explains. “Durable materials like granite, porcelain, and quartz ensure practicality for a busy family. A generous tub platform allows adults to supervise bath time—and later, it’s the perfect perch for mom to enjoy a glass of wine and some candles.”

The shower was upgraded with slab walls for easy maintenance, a large bench, and a long shelf for products. A custom brass enclosure and furniture-style vanities with ample storage complete the transformation, adding a sense of historic elegance. “Our clients’ dream of a black-and-white checkerboard floor was brought to life, paired with dusty lavender wainscoting that softens the room and anchors the bold flooring,” Nicole says.

In the mudroom, the family needed space to corral the clutter of everyday life. Storage for shoes, bags, and coats was essential, and the solution divided storage by family member to give everyone their own space. “Taking advantage of the tall ceilings, we designed a custom piece with both open shelving and drawers for flexibility as the kids grow,” Nicole explains. “A once-unused desk was transformed into a sweet little bench—perfect for slipping on shoes—while adding a pop of soft color. The millwork nods to the home’s historic details, including the dentil molding found on the exterior trim.”

For the powder room, Vestige Home crafted a playful design that reflects the family’s fun-loving spirit—and their two mischievous Bengal cats. “We turned it into a funky little jewel box,” Nicole explains. “We replaced the oversized vanity with a smaller, custom piece featuring a wavy decorative edge, bringing a sense of whimsy. Handmade brass sconces and soapstone finishes lend patina and richness, while a fantastical, cat-inspired wallpaper pays tribute to their pets. Wainscoting adds practicality, and bobbin trim creates a charming, detailed finish.”

Nicole says the key to the project’s success was blending historic charm with modern functionality. “By respecting the home’s original features and incorporating our clients’ personalities and needs, we created spaces that are not only beautiful but also practical for everyday living,” she says. “This home now stands as a testament to timeless elegance and thoughtful design—a true sanctuary for its residents.”
