There’s a new design hub in Rowayton, CT. The Shop by Calla Cane is one part design studio, one part cabinetry showroom, and one part lifestyle store. The integrative experience allows customers to not only see the process behind the signature Calla Cane aesthetic—thoughtful minimalism with an edge—but they can interact with it. Whether stopping in to dream up a kitchen remodel or just to snag a housewarming gift, The Shop is bringing beauty and community to an already thriving area. Over email, Calla told us more.

Tell us about the new location?

I have worked and lived in Rowayton on and off over the last 12 years and it has always been a dream to open a shop in a place I feel so connected to. Rowayton is not only beautiful, but it has always had a strong sense of community. There are several town events that bring town members together to celebrate music and the arts. It is the type of place where business owners and community members make a point to come in and introduce themselves.

What is the customer experience? What can visitors expect when coming to The Shop?

The Shop is a lifestyle shop, home to a selection of products for your home and yourself. It is the perfect spot to pick up a housewarming gift, or just a little something to freshen up your existing space. This fall we will be introducing apparel and jewelry, as well as hosting a curated selection of pop-in apparel brands.

Is this also a design studio?

We are a full-service design studio first and foremost. We think about spaces and homes from the ground up. Looking into 2024 we are bringing architectural services in house; homeowners will now be able to come to us not only for interior design but also to design their new home or to renovate an existing one.

The Shop is closely integrated with our design studio and cabinetry showroom. We joined forces with Prestige Cabinetry & Design out of Bridgeport, CT to create a cabinetry showroom as part of our new space. We look forward to launching a custom line of furniture and cabinetry in the coming year.

We wanted to allow visitors an opportunity to glimpse into the studio and see the creative process in real time. If a customer pops in at the right moment, they may catch a glimpse of our team working with clients or collaborating on design projects.

What does a typical day look like for you?

If you have ever worked in a design studio, you know that every day is different. I am lucky enough to be surrounded by a group of bright women, who fill the office with creative energy, good music, and laughter. Our team can often be found collaborating on projects and meeting with clients. When we aren’t submitting construction drawings, installing a home, or photographing our work, you will find us paddle boarding on the five-mile river across from our offices, riding bikes or walking to Arden’s, the local cafe for a mid-day coffee break.

Any ‘must-have’ products or new designers / artists that you carry and should be on our radar?

We have partnered with Cas Friese, the artist and owner of ARDEN + WHITE GALLERY to curate a special collection of artworks from the gallery’s talented roster to showcase at The Shop. This curated selection will span across a range of artistic mediums, including painting, textile art, and sculpture. We plan to feature new artworks at The Shop on a quarterly basis.
