This rustic home is situated in the popular Park Meadows neighborhood of Park City, Utah, just blocks away from downtown. “Park Meadows is one of the most sought-after residential areas for families in Park City,” says interior designer Jen Samson. “The neighborhood is filled with large, pine tree-lined streets, new and old homes, and the area truly becomes a wonderland during the winter months.”
Jen’s clients are a young family who relocated to Utah from Northern California. “On top of the priority list was the request to bring a California sensibility to their new home and to bring in as much light as possible,” Jen explains. “Light colors, natural wood tones, a serene vibe that was both welcoming and warm.”
Jen worked with Farrell Architecture and Alpine Design Build Utah on a top-to-bottom remodel. “The scope grew as the project progressed,” she recalls. “The home in its original state was extremely dated and dark. We opened the floor plan completely. We removed structural beams and walls, which pushed the ceiling up significantly, and added clerestory windows. Every surface of this home was touched, both inside and out.”
They had just 18 months to create the family’s dream Park City place. “We were pushing to finish the home by end of year and the desire for our clients to be moved into their new home by then,” Jen recalls. Style-wise, she wanted the home to feel tailored yet comfortable. “A timeless home that has an undercurrent of Craftsman style,” she says. The resulting look includes soft, earthy hues with an energetic mix of patterns, artfully blending the effortlessly casual California style they hoped for with mountain living warmth.
“Like most projects, the timeline shifted for various reasons often including weather delays,” she recalls. “As a designer it is always so fun when it works out to have a big reveal, and for this project, that was most definitely the case! The clients arrived as a snowstorm was in full effect and walked into our version of California-meets-Park City. Although they knew what to expect, there was a visceral feeling of surprise due to the unexpected pieces we brought in to truly complete their home.”
She says that moment is her favorite part of the job. “One of the things I enjoy most as a designer is taking a project all the way to the finish line by inserting art and objects that I have sourced and collected that are then hand-picked specifically for our clients and their homes,” Jen explains. “This project was no different. We shipped and trucked an enormous amount of art and accessories to Park City from California. We layered the home with vintage studio pottery, new and old pieces of art, various other accessories and objects that truly speak to our clients’ history and to their future. They were in love.”
