Balancing classic Southern elegance with everyday livability, Charlotte’s Myers Park neighborhood is a North Carolina gem. “Known for its mature, tree-lined streets and beautiful architecture, Myers Park has a timeless charm and a strong sense of place within the city,” says interior designer Cate Gutter. “It’s the perfect setting for a family home that’s meant to be lived in, not just admired.”
Cate is the owner and principal designer at CWG Design, a boutique studio known for creating personal spaces infused with color and joy—and she was eager to transform this Myers Park home for a young, busy family. “They wanted a home that supported their everyday lives,” she explains. “Their primary goal was to create a warm, cohesive home that felt beautiful and elevated, yet entirely kid-friendly. Nothing was meant to feel too precious; instead, the focus was on layered, livable spaces where comfort and design could coexist effortlessly.”
The project included whole-home furnishings, paired with select renovations to enhance both function and character. Updates were made to the kitchen and powder room, along with a thoughtful refresh of the bar area. “We designed custom built-ins in the lower level to add warmth, architectural interest, and tailored storage, helping the home feel cohesive and intentional throughout,” Cate shares. “We also designed two newly updated fireplace surrounds that really elevated the spaces.”
Just off the entry, the piano room sets the tone for the home. “Featuring a piano gifted by the homeowners’ grandparents, the space carries both sentimental and visual weight,” Cate notes. “Designed to feel moody and inviting, it creates a memorable first impression and establishes the layered, collected approach found throughout the rest of the house.” Another key must-have was a dining room that felt inviting and refined, yet durable enough to handle kids scooting chairs, lingering at the table, and occasionally pulling up a seat during dinner parties.
Keeping within that framework, Cate designed the children’s rooms to feel personal and reflective of each child’s personality, while still tying seamlessly into the overall aesthetic of the home. One highlight includes a custom mural in the girl’s room, depicting a blooming flower garden complete with a tiny mushroom house fit for a mouse. It was created by Louisiana-based artist Liz Russell, who flew in and completed the artwork over the course of a few days.
From the close of the home in early February—when measurements could first be taken—to the family’s move-in during June, the process moved quickly and with great focus. “The goal was to deliver a fully furnished, thoughtfully designed home that allowed for a seamless transition,” Cate explains. “The homeowners were a dream to work with: clear in their vision, decisive, and trusting of the process, which allowed the project to move efficiently. When they saw the finished home, they were thrilled to step into a space that felt complete, personal, and ready to be lived in from day one!”
