“It’s a classic prewar apartment,” designer Monica Fried says of this Upper East Side property. Her clients hail from Miami, where they live in a sleek, contemporary space, and called on the designer to help create a pied-à-terre that would house their impressive art collection and really give the sense that they weren’t in Florida anymore. “We wanted to preserve the old world feel and update with a modern relaxed vibe,” she says.

“The apartment underwent a six-month gut renovation,” Monica shares. “We were integrally involved in making all of the interior selections from stone and tile to cabinetry.” For furnishings, the family was open to mixing vintage with modern, which gave the apartment a classically cool vibe.

Their daughter had one request: for her bedroom to be reminiscent of Sketch, the world-famous (and very pink) restaurant in London.  “We started with the inspiration of the India Mahdavi Sketch chairs and designed a custom dusty pink tufted mohair bed,” Monica says. “From there we layered in the very chic Fold geometric rug from The Rug Company. The pink and green colors and retro style were just right for the space.”

A similar ‘70s-style color palette weaves throughout each room, with bold stone choices and plenty of standout accessories. Monica and her team left the walls blank, and the clients then curated from their collection. “It was so amazing to walk in after the art went up and see the compositions in each room,” she says. “I was blown away.”
