The home is located in Philadelphia’s historic Rittenhouse neighborhood. “There is a dense aggregation of similar scale brick rowhomes that are a maximum of three stories so even though it is urban, it feels very residential,” says designer Lauren Thomsen. “Residents love the sunny, tree-lined streets in close proximity to restaurants, shopping, and iconic Rittenhouse Square Park, making the area pedestrian and bike friendly.”
The 1,870-square-foot home originally consisted of a series of small, dark, compartmentalized rooms. Rather than adding square footage, Lauren completely reimagined the interior to improve circulation and maximize every inch. “It was a gut renovation,” she notes. “The client wanted a cohesive, elevated aesthetic brought about by high-quality millwork throughout the home.”
The team relocated the kitchen to the center of the main level, creating an open-concept layout that seamlessly connects the living, dining, and entertaining areas. A 14-foot-tall full-height sliding door extends the living space to a rear patio while drawing abundant natural light deep into the home. On the second floor, the traditional bedroom-and-bathroom arrangement was reimagined as an open primary suite lined with custom millwork storage. Rich wood paneling wraps the walls throughout, adding a warm, timeless character that unifies each level.
Finding creative solutions for the home’s tight footprint was top of mind throughout the project. “We were able to creatively navigate the constraints of a 100-year-old rowhouse to make every nook and corner functional and elegant,” Lauren explains. “For example, the millwork at the front of the home solves for the absence of a mudroom.”
The result is a rowhouse that feels dramatically larger than its footprint suggests. Thoughtful planning, architectural millwork, and carefully considered materials transformed a once-dark, compartmentalized interior into a light-filled home that balances contemporary living with the enduring character of one of Philadelphia’s most beloved historic neighborhoods.
