You really couldn’t ask for a more idyllic setting for this modern farmhouse. “This home is located close to the setting of The Great Gatsby, about 20 miles East of New York City on the north shore of Long Island,” interior designer Becky Shea says. “It’s charmingly situated on a private dead-end road across from a farm for retired horses and abutting a nature preserve. A cozy, modern farmhouse vibe was meant to be!”
The home, a new build and significant upgrade for the client’s existing home, has a spacious primary suite with a private deck, along with a coffee bar and steam shower ensuite. There are five additional oversized bedrooms, five and a half baths, a sauna, and a home gym across three finished floors. Becky’s design firm, Becky Shea Design (BS/D) was involved every step of the way, beginning with the robust floor plans.
One of Becky’s original clients referred her to the homeowners for the project, and her attention to detail was a perfect fit for their wish list. “They’re a wonderful couple with whom we’ve become fast friends,” she says. “The husband is a first-generation powerhouse lawyer specializing in private equity—we joke he is a giant teddy bear at heart but can command any room or meeting with impressive acuity. His wife is a full-time mom to two girls, who also runs a popular blog and is equally impressive. They love to entertain and cook, so that was top of mind as we thought through the design and flow of their home.” The family also wanted to ensure the farm views were maximized at every opportunity, which was achieved through beautifully oversized windows and glass doors.
From concept to construction, the project spanned a year and a half. “One challenge that ended up working out for the best occurred when it was discovered the architect did not specify enough support in the family room/kitchen area, so that structural steel I-beam you see was added after the fact to support the house’s weight,” Becky says. “It also allowed us to create & add on the breakfast room, which makes the space. I can’t imagine the house without it now. It’s such a statement room!”
