This home is located in Calgary, Alberta—a city that balances natural beauty with an evolving design scene. “I love how this particular neighborhood feels grounded and established, with a quiet energy that lends itself beautifully to a calming, sanctuary-like home,” says interior designer Katie Rioux of DWK Interiors. “It’s close to nature but still accessible, and it gave us the perfect canvas for this personal project. Bonus points—it’s a three-minute walk from me!”
Distance wasn’t the only close element for this particular project. “The clients are two of the most important people in my life—my parents,” she beams. “This home was designed specifically for them, with a focus on longevity, ease, and beauty.” They requested a home that was comfortable, yet timeless and elegant. Must-haves included a warm, open-concept kitchen, a serene primary suite, and thoughtful design choices that would support them as they age.
“Starting in the kitchen, one of my favorite features is the quartzite countertop with its soft, wavy veining—a natural focal point that adds both movement and grounding,” Katie tells us—mentioning the mixed-metal finishes and stoneware backsplash that add an artful balance to the room. “In the living room, the archway detail between spaces became a meaningful architectural feature that subtly connects the whole home.”
The primary bedroom feels calming and earthy, with an olive headboard as well as a subtle leaf detail wallpaper, and layered, tonal bedding that feels serene and cocoon-like. “The ensuite bathroom continues the story of curves and texture,” the designer explains. “Here, the arched detail above the tub echoes the architecture found throughout the home, while fluted tile details bring cohesion and continuity.”
Every design element was specifically chosen to feel timeless and tactile. “The front loft style space is another favorite,” Katie tells us. “It’s a place to paint, read and escape. What I love most is that every space in this home features something unique—whether it’s a feature tile, artisan wallpaper, or a thoughtfully placed architectural detail. These layers not only add depth, but also make each room feel special in its own right, while still harmonizing as a whole.”
Katie was proud to lead the full design from start to finish. “The project reflects our holistic approach to interiors, where every layer is considered for both beauty and function,” she explains. “But designing for loved ones always adds a different kind of pressure—you want it to be perfect. Balancing my parents’ practical needs with a cohesive design vision, while also managing my emotional investment in the project, required extra thoughtfulness and care.”
Of course, her close relationship meant that the project was a success. “It was deeply rewarding—and emotional. Knowing I was designing the space where they’ll create their next chapter, grow older, and host future family moments made every decision feel sacred. The most rewarding part was witnessing their joy and knowing this was a gift I could give back to them after all they’ve given me.”
