These are long time clients of mine who I’ve been working with since 2020,” says Kaitlin Thomas of Los Angeles-based Nine Dot Design. “The wife is a screenwriter, and the husband is a literary agent.” When Kaitlin first met the couple, they were recently married and had just purchased their first home together. “The first phase of their project included furnishings for the downstairs since they didn’t have anything cohesive,” she recalls. “We then converted their garage into an office and creative space, and once they found out they were pregnant, we tackled phase three of their project, which included their bedroom, converting the guest bedroom into a nursery, and creating a second guest bedroom for another home office.” The couple’s main goals were to create a creative haven for their growing family, focusing on their passion for artwork, movies, and music.

The primary bedroom features a custom bed, sofa for reading or watching television, and a vanity area. The stool is from Panoplie and the vanity itself is from Worlds Away. Kaitlin added nightstands from Clad Home and a rug from Shoppe Amber Interiors. The artwork was collected over time by the homeowners.

For the home office—formerly the garage—Kaitlin added a large L-shaped desk from Faithful Roots. Here, more personal artwork is on display as well as other collectibles and books, and the light fixtures are Eny Lee Parker.  “She now has full separation from the main house and a creative space for her to write and spend time in,” the designer says.

In the nursery, they asked for a fun wallpaper. “We started with selecting the perfect wallpaper from Morris & Co. and built the rest of the elements from there with a lot of neutral colors in the rug, glider, and crib, and a pop of color with the dresser, window treatments, and artwork,” Kaitlin explains. “We found these beautiful pieces from Kayla Plosz Antiel that we featured above the crib.”

The designer admits that the timeline was challenging, as the project began in the midst of the pandemic lockdowns. “It was a bit tricky to figure out the workflow at first, since we couldn’t see each other for many months,” she says. The result is a happy home—and one that will set the scene for many stories, both in the client’s professional work and personal life. See more in the slideshow.
