LETTER FROM THE EDITOR:
The shift from winter to spring is at first subtle, and then suddenly, undeniable. Foliage returns quietly, with morning dew catching the light atop fresh green buds. The trees begin to bloom, with pale pink and soft whites dotting the landscape. Then—poof!—everything feels alive again. Vibrant, layered, and in full expression.
To me, beautifully designed homes come together the same way. Slowly, thoughtfully, and with intention, until it seems that one day they’ve always existed just as they are. Perfectly curated and deeply personal, these are the interiors that spark joy and curiosity—and they are the homes I’m always most eager to share with you.
This issue is no exception, with that ethos wonderfully represented in the home of actress and TV host Drew Barrymore. Stepping into her house in Upstate New York, the first thing I noticed was the art. Every piece tells a meaningful part of her story and represents a lifetime of collecting. Drew didn’t buy this house, hire a decorator, and fill it with all-new everything. She brought her art; she brought the furniture she’s had for decades—refreshing it with new upholstery. And she experimented with paint colors, again and again. The house slowly revealed itself to her through the seasons, and it’s an honor for us to reveal it to you within our pages.
Other designers featured in this issue share this same approach—Angela Wheeler just north of Toronto, Katie LeClercq in Washington state—fearlessly updating what they once deemed “perfect.” As we move into a new season, let’s embrace this idea: A house should never be “done,” but rather grow and change alongside us.
And as I leave you to enjoy this issue, I’d love to end on a celebratory note. Technically speaking, this is our five-year anniversary issue! In 2020, my business partner, Danny Seo—pictured with me here—approached me with the idea of bringing our digital platform to print. There were nerves—we’d been an online-only resource for 10 years!—but the risk has been well worth it. Our first issue hit newsstands in March of 2021 and my commitment to bringing you the best in design is stronger than ever.
Here’s to the next fabulous five!
