Interior designer Brooke Spreckman leads the successful L.A.-based firm, Design Hutch. Naturally, when a high school friend purchased a new pad in the bustling Valley Village neighborhood, she reached out to Brooke to up the ante on the interiors. “She wanted a warm, comfortable-yet-pulled-together feeling,” the designer explains. “Nothing needed to feel new.”
The Spanish-style home features original architectural details, and it was important to both the client and the designer that the look and feel of the space honored that. Brooke worked on furnishings, room by room, blending an artful mix of custom pieces with vintage finds.
In the living room, the cozy floor plan allows for a vintage area rug, a vintage marble coffee table, and a generous custom sectional. “The fabric is a great shade of rust that can go both light with pink tones and masculine with brown undertones,” Brooke explains. “It’s also very soft and extremely durable. So, it serves as both a casual living space but can also be dressed up for a more formal setting as well.”
The adjacent dining room features a rug from Nordic Knots, a custom stone dining table, and a vintage Spanish-style chandelier. “My favorite part of the dining room was the piece of vintage art that I curated from collector, Chloe Collects,” the designer shares. “She has an incredible collection that I love sourcing from. It is by artist K.FIAZI, a late painter who had a huge collection of his works, sold after he passed away. I have a few pieces of his in my personal collection as well.”
There’s also a u-shaped breakfast nook, which features a custom striped banquette that maximizes seating. “I made the bench in 3 separate pieces so it could ultimately end up being used as one long rectangular bench, with 2 freestanding large-scale ottomans, in case the client decides to repurpose it,” Brooke says. This room also prominently displays a beloved piece of ceramic art from the client’s grandmother. “I wanted to make sure that this was displayed in a prominent space in the home, and I love that you can see it all the way from the living room, through the dining room and into the breakfast nook.”
Finally, the designer set her sights on the bedroom, where a wall of custom built-ins offers additional storage. “We painted the walls, ceilings, and built-ins in the same color, so the overall room feels warm, like you’re hanging out in the spa lounge at a hotel,” Brooke says. The space is furnished with an upholstered bed and vintage nightstands. The bed is dressed in throw pillows made from a favorite Tree of Life fabric, and a velvet bench from Athena Calderone’s collection at Crate & Barrel sits at the foot.
The six-month project was completed in layers, and the designer says the client was thrilled. “She was shocked at how I styled the space with all of her grandmother’s existing vintage decor, and a mix of newly selected pieces. She felt that I put my own fingerprint on the layout of those pieces in a both intentional and minimal yet eclectic way. My client is obsessed with her house and so am I. It feels both high end and comfortable, timeless, busy but still and neutral.”
