“If we had to describe our Seal Beach Project in one sentence, it would be: Where European femme design meets the classic laid-back California Coastal lifestyle,” says Ali Faulkner, founder and principal designer at AEF Interiors.
Her firm was tasked with the interior renovation of the home, and the homeowners wanted a space that would be inspired by their travels. As you walk through the home, a variety of design details reflect this beautifully: the English Cottage-inspired dining room, marble countertops throughout the kitchen, dining, and bathroom (a material that has withstood the test of time throughout the world), and the living room decor details, like ruffles and floral fabrics alongside scalloped side tables.
At AEF Interiors, Ali leads a talented team of women who worked together to bring the homeowners’ vision to life. They tell us more:
Tell us about this home. Where is it located, and what do you love most about the area?
Our Seal Beach Project is located right in the heart of Seal Beach, California, just a stone’s throw away from the Pacific Coastline. When we tell you the fact that you can feel the ocean mist from the patio of this project, we’re not kidding, and it is closely tied to the way we designed the home. Seal Beach is your quintessential laid-back California beach town, and that’s exactly why we love it.
What was your scope of work?
The Seal Beach project was a full home renovation project, including both the inside and outside of the home. The clients were originally only going to do the inside, but once they saw our plans, they decided the exterior needed to match the new vibe (we love when that happens!).
While we wanted to infuse quintessential California living elements into this home, we knew we didn’t want to go for the classic white, bright, and beachy aesthetic that we’ve gone for in the past. Character was the name of the game in this remodel, and we wanted to bring in as much of it as possible, starting off with the kitchen and dining space, or what we lovingly refer to as the ‘Ditchen.’ [Editor’s note: The design team shares specific details in the slideshow!]
Did this project have any challenges?
One of the most interesting parts of this project was that our client was actually the contractor himself. Although he typically works in commercial rather than residential construction, he wanted to be part of bringing his family’s dream home to life in a way that was more than just approving our designs. He wanted to be hands on in the process as well.
This was a new experience for our team, learning to balance between working with someone in a client capacity as well as a professional capacity, at the same time. We learned a lot about communication over the course of the six months we spent working together in the construction phase.
How long did the project take, and what did the client say when they saw the finished space?
In terms of the entire design and construction process, between approvals, permits and everything else that comes with the process, it took about 2 years (1.5 years of design + permits and then 6 months for construction). It was definitely a different experience with these clients in terms of their “wow!” moment because they were so closely connected to the process and visited the jobsite almost daily during construction.
Our client/contractor spent so many late nights making sure all the details were right and bringing our vision + his family’s home to life, and working so hard to get everything done within their timeline, so it was such a sweet moment when we were finally able to install the project, bring in all of their furniture and style the home, and they were finally able to see the full vision in real life. There’s just something about seeing the space fully complete that always brings such joy – it’s the best part of the whole process!
Why do you think interior design is important, and how do you see that reflected in this finished space?
We always say that a good design is not only beautiful, but functional as well. Sure, it’s great when a design takes your breath away, but is the space actually meant to be lived in at your current life stage? Is it able to grow with you? And does it actually make sense for your lifestyle?
When we started working with these clients, they had a few things at the top of their wish list stylistically (i.e. creating a space inspired by their travels, designing a home that brought nature in, etc.) but also functionality wise. For example, their eldest son has a severe dust allergy, so we ended up choosing an engineered hardwood flooring option that is gentler on allergies and also works better for the coastal humidity we get here in Orange County.
Overall, we believe that the importance of interior design lies in not only bringing your design vision to life and creating a breathtaking space, but in also creating a space that functions exactly as our clients need it to.
