This reimagined California ranch is set against the rolling hills and ocean breezes of Palos Verdes, a scenic coastal community in Los Angeles County. The home underwent a comprehensive two-year renovation led by the team at Pure Salt Interiors, with a vision centered on equal parts beauty and functionality.
“Rooted in the charm of classic ranch architecture, the home is grounded, open, and deeply tied to the land,” says Leigh Lincoln, Co-Founder & Principal Designer at Pure Salt. “Every inch was thoughtfully maximized to honor California’s indoor-outdoor lifestyle, from the flow of light through large-scale openings to the continuity of materials that carry from interior to exterior. The result is a home that feels both timeless and distinctly current—a modern ranch reimagined for a new generation.”
Pure Salt’s clients envisioned a home that would be a true reflection of themselves: a couple who love to entertain, cook, and gather, who cherish their dog and imagine future family moments. “We wanted to create a foundation for this young family that honors their history while incorporating custom elements tailored to their needs and desires,” adds Aly Morford, Co-Founder & Principal Designer at Pure Salt. “They wanted unique architectural details that suited the ranch-style home, an open living space that connected to the outdoors, and a richly layered primary suite designed for rest and relaxation.”
Stepping inside, the entry sets the tone with a balance of welcome and simplicity. A split Dutch door in vertical oak opens to a pared-back console vignette and a thoughtfully designed mini mudroom, featuring subtle details: aged brass, soft plaster, and quiet reflection that speak to the home’s character—natural, tactile, and layered with ease.
“The kitchen serves as the heart of the home, the anchor around which life unfolds,” says Leigh. “Designed for owners who love to cook and entertain, it features a double island, offering space for both prep and gathering.” It’s a space that balances form and function, with creamy cabinetry, stained oak islands, and softly veined stone surfaces. Pure Salt brought in brass fixtures that will patina over time, as well as a sculpted plaster hood that acts as an architectural focal point. Woven stools and organic greenery infuse the room with texture and life. “Every surface was considered for both durability and delight—a true reflection of our belief that practicality and beauty can exist side by side,” the designers explain.
Framed by an arched opening and bathed in California light, the dining room embodies the soul of this modern ranch. “The farmhouse oak table, surrounded by cane-backed chairs, invites long dinners and lingering conversation. Stacking doors open to the outdoors, blurring the line between interior and landscape—it’s a space that celebrates connection, both with nature and with one another,” Leigh continues.
In the living room, natural light filters through linen drapery, illuminating a palette of sand, rattan, and oak. The design balances comfort and refinement, mixing linen upholstery, leather accents, and handcrafted details. Framed views to the backyard create an easy dialogue between indoors and out, while plush textures encourage everyday living that feels both relaxed and elevated.
Just off the main hall, the powder room offers a moment of quiet contrast. Here, smooth plaster walls shift in tone from warm taupe to smoky gray, creating an intimate retreat. A custom oak vanity and brass fixtures ground the design in natural materials, while soft light and subtle texture lend atmosphere and calm.
Pure Salt says the primary suite serves as the emotional heart of the home—a space to retreat and reset. “Vaulted oak ceilings and a neutral palette create a sense of calm and continuity,” Leigh notes. “Linen bedding, sun-washed tones, and sculptural lighting invite stillness, while the adjoining bath continues the story in stone, plaster, and patinated brass. Every element was chosen for its touch and tone, ensuring that the space feels both restorative and timeless—a sanctuary shaped by nature and designed for peace.”
Each guest suite was conceived as its own quiet refuge, a continuation of the home’s natural palette and serene rhythm. Layered in soft linens, warm woods, and sun-washed neutrals, the rooms reflect a refined simplicity that feels both welcoming and restorative. Textural bedding in earthy tones brings depth without distraction, while details—from aged bronze sconces to organic tile—lend character and ease. “The adjoining baths extend the story of understated beauty,” Leigh notes. “Each one is unique yet cohesive. Together, they balance texture and tone, offering guests the same sense of quiet luxury found throughout the home.”
The designers admit that the great room presented an initial challenge. “The clients wanted a space that felt open and airy, while also intimate,” Aly recalls. “We responded by defining unique areas that feel distinct without sacrificing the flow of the floor plan. That meant archways that lead from one room to another and cohesive materials—like plaster accents—that tie the spaces together. The living room itself was particularly unconventional, with a more elongated footprint. We wanted to maximize the space while creating a design that felt cohesive and functional, so we developed two rooms in one, incorporating an attached library. These clients love to read and showcase their family history, so a statement built-in was key in connecting the space and reflecting how they live.”
The clients were thrilled with the outcome—and have already signed the design duo for another project slated for 2026.
