This cabin is in a fairly remote part of the Pacific Northwest. “It’s tucked into the hills of Lyle, Washington, about 1.5 hours from Portland, Oregon,” explains interior designer Allison Lind. “The area is incredibly remote. You lose complete cell service about 20 minutes away. Surrounded by rolling hills and a river, it’s a really picturesque getaway.”
Her clients originally purchased this home as a hunting cabin for the husband. “The original goal was to give it a basic refresh to make it feel more livable and cozier for those random weekends,” she explains. “The wife even acknowledged, ‘I’ll likely rarely even come here.’ But as we began reviewing some inspiration and discussing style goals, it quickly evolved into a ‘Let’s just see what you’d come up with,’ and I took it from there!”
Their primary residence is quite contemporary, with a bright and airy feel, so aesthetically, they craved the opposite. “They wanted it to feel special,” Allison explains, noting the more rustic aesthetic. It began with Allison’s design firm—Allison Lind Interiors—helping to select some basic materials but soon evolved into a full gut remodel. “We worked closely with the builder to fully customize nearly every inch of this home,” she says, checking off items including full creative design of the interior, and advising on both the exterior color and the window and door package.
The walls utilize a variety of textures, from Portola Paint Roman Clay in the entryway to wall paneling from Hewn adorning the kitchen. To make room for both weekends with the hunting buddies and family getaways with their two small children, she added a bunk room that sleeps four. For the bathrooms, she relied on travertine for its rustic appeal.
Now, it’s a luxury cabin getaway—and skips all the cabin clichés you might find typically find. “And,” she concludes with a laugh, “the husband wanted it to be ‘sneaky fancy—couldn’t have his hunting buddies thinking he was too fancy.” With thoughtful comfort infused in every room, we can’t imagine they’d mind.
