When a young couple left Boston for the ‘burbs, they faced a common design challenge for their new house in Wellesley, Massachusetts. “The client wanted the design of the home to marry with the architecture of the existing space,” explains interior designer Nicole Hirsch. “So, it lived somewhere between more traditional New England style and moving to a more contemporary feel.”
Nicole’s eponymous design firm was tasked with a complete renovation of the kitchen, primary bathroom, and powder room. “There were updates throughout the rest of the home, which included updating the fireplaces, staircase, and refining the millwork throughout,” she recalls. “We were very mindful to keep a transitional sensibility when creating the overall aesthetic for the home.”
Entering the home, a blend of modern minimalism sits alongside artistic details in the foyer. “The abstract staircase runner serves as the focal point, while the clean lines, contrasting colors, and sculptural elements create a sense of sophistication and elegance,” Nicole explains. “This space sets the tone for the rest of the home, showcasing a commitment to thoughtful design and dramatic contrasts.” A custom runner by Art & Loom dresses up the black staircase, while a playful light fixture by Giopato & Coombes emphasizes the height of the room, creating a sense of grandeur.
The living room takes a similar high contrast approach. “The design is cohesive, blending comfort with sophistication,” the designer says. “Curved forms, neutral tones, and thoughtful accents create a harmonious and inviting ambiance. The centerpiece is a pair of curved sofas that create an inviting and fluid seating arrangement. A rounded, light wood coffee table complements the organic shapes of the sofas.” Nicole brought in warmth with muted throw pillows, while the dark fireplace surround offers dramatic contrast. “The interplay between light and dark elements, as well as the careful layering of textures, results in a space that feels both contemporary and timeless,” Nicole explains.
By utilizing rich textures and finishes, the result is a family home that is gorgeous at every turn, but also comfortable for a growing family. “The clients have been so happy in their new home,” Nicole tells us. “It is both comfortable and livable for their growing family while also jaw-droppingly beautiful for entertaining.”
