Take a drive from San Francisco across the Golden Gate Bridge and you’ll land in Sausalito—a quaint town with gorgeous views of the water. While it’d be easy for a designer to pull on tropes like seashells and boat paintings, Nicole Salceda of Eye for Pretty opted to create a more refined coastal vibe for her clients. With soft blue hues featured in everything from the wallpaper to the luxe Lacanche range, the property feels right at home on the water without being a cliché.

Tell us about your clients. Who lives here? What were the design goals for their home?
The clients are a young family with two children who underwent an extensive remodel (down to the studs) and purchased a full furniture package to complete the home. Our goal was to open everything up and go light and bright to maximize the views and create a cohesive feel. They wanted the home to be bright, functional, cozy, and perfectly livable for their busy family.

The clients had been working with an amazing architect for almost a year before we were brought into the project. We were tasked with a full remodel of all spaces which included material selections, paint, cabinetry design, and full custom furniture. Our client had been dreaming of this Lacanche oven in Delft Blue for quite some time and while we don’t generally incorporate much color into our designs, we were very excited to make her dream a reality and chose colors and materials that complemented the focal point range. It’s definitely a showstopper and a conversation piece!

How do you describe the style?
Coastal Traditional. We wanted to take advantage of the home’s location and incorporate more traditional elements like millwork, wallpaper, and molding the client loved, without going overboard with typical coastal elements. Instead, we used several different hues of blue, lots of textures/materials that were family-friendly and played up the New England aesthetic our client was drawn to.

Did this project have any challenges?
The client first emailed us in 2020. Our main challenges were strict building codes in a small coastal town, Covid and the associated delays/lead times, and the many flights of stairs! The day we installed furniture was one of the warmest days on record and we definitely got our steps in with all the stairs!
