A note from Kelli Lamb, Editorial Director:
Travel is part of my job as an editor. Whether I’m jetting off to tradeshows, photo shoots, or events, it seems like my suitcase has been in constant use for the last several years. I’m truly grateful that I’ve been able to see so much of the world and meet so many wonderful people—and yet I was missing that feeling of a true summer vacation.
You know what I’m talking about: That moment you step away from your day-to-day responsibilities and embrace your version of rest and relaxation. For some, it’s a poolside cabana and a good book. For others, it involves packing up the camper and hitting the open road. What I love most? The feeling of visiting somewhere familiar, and the excitement of exploring somewhere brand new.
For me, a true getaway was a recent weekend spent at Santa Barbara’s beautiful Hotel Californian, celebrating a dear friend’s birthday. We had nothing on the itinerary except enjoying the charming coastal town on foot—wine tasting, antiques shopping, and searching for the best lobster roll on the pier. As I drove home towards Los Angeles, I realized those two quick days had been the best “summer vacation” I’d had in years.
It’s a feeling you couldn’t bottle if you tried—but some of the homes in this edition of the magazine come pretty darn close to capturing it. In Alys Beach, Florida, interior designer Sarah Rogers built a home where her family could gather for years to come. We also tour a petite pool house in Burbank, California, ensuring vacation is just steps away for its owners. And in the coveted lakeside destination of Muskoka, Ontario, Parris McKenna and her husband brought that peaceful, easy feeling to their everyday routine when they opted to live there year-round. So did the Silvas, 11th-generation “Nantuckers” who joyfully live on the island 365 days a year.
Here’s to a summer of great adventure, whether you find it at home or away.
