For the annual San Francisco Decorator Showcase, designer Sabah Mansoor brought her bold and imaginative point of view. “As my first showcase, it was an exciting opportunity to explore creative vision without limits,” she tells us. “I designed purely from imagination, bringing to life spaces I’ve always envisioned and dreamed of. It was a completely different experience from residential design, where the focus is on translating a client’s personality and lifestyle into their home.”
Sabah’s Northern California-based firm, Sabah Mansoor Design, was tasked with creating a bold bathroom. “I envisioned the clients as dreamers, individuals drawn to beauty, texture, and a touch of the theatrical in their everyday lives,” she says. “They appreciate artful spaces that blur the line between fantasy and function.”
She titled the space L’eau Muse, which was drawn from a love of textiles and her roots in fashion and knitwear design. The drama of haute couture is at the forefront, with walls composed of a striking, tapestry-like ‘mural’ made of hand-cut slabs of marble and travertine. “It is a design I created and had custom-cut and fitted for the space,” Sabah explains. “The tiled floor, made of marble, ceramic, and porcelain, is also special to me; it is reminiscent of a knitted sweater’s weave.” The floor tile is by Kelly Wearstler, while the mirrored tiles are Ann Sacks.
The tilework proved to be a challenge. “I went to six different fabricators who refused the project, expressing concern over the technical cutting and pattern,” she recalls. “I was persistent nonetheless; the seventh fabricator willingly worked with my design, executing flawless hand-cut pieces and seamless installation.”
The window panels were custom-commissioned and hand-embroidered with a delicate floral motif by artisans in India. “Their craftsmanship and representation are a nod to my heritage and deep appreciation for the textile arts,” the designer says. “I also love the blown glass drop Medusa Bloom Chandelier [from OCHRE] over the sink area, as well as the mirrored tile, which adds unexpected elements among all the natural materials.”
It’s clearly a space for those who see their home as a canvas for creative self-expression. To get the look in your space, Sabah suggests starting with a striking statement piece or dynamic print to establish a visual anchor. “Then, gradually layer in boldness through color, textiles, and lighting,” she says. “For those ready to make a dramatic impact from the start, collaborating with an interior designer can help ensure that every element, from scale to proportion to palette, works in harmony to create a cohesive and compelling space.”
