Entertaining expert Stephanie Booth Shafran inherited her passion for parties from her parents. Growing up in Los Angeles, they often hosted a wide circle of friends, and Stephanie quickly realized that entertaining could be the ultimate form of self expression — and she’s shared her passion beautifully through her bestselling book, You’re Invited: Classic, Elegant Entertaining. Stephanie believes that no matter the occasion, we should aim to celebrate the season and make lasting memories. Though many of us continue to shelter in place, we’re bringing a bit of her ethos to our at-home happy hours. Today, she’s sharing a recipe for the Salty Dog, which is best served with a great playlist and a game or two of backgammon:

Salty Dog
(Makes 2 Cocktails)

Flaked salt, such as Maldon
Lemon, lime or grapefruit half
1 cup freshly squeezed grapefruit juice
1/3 cup vodka or gin
Ice cubes
Grapefruit flavored seltzer, optional
Fresh or dried grapefruit slices, optional

Sprinkle salt in a thin layer on a small plate. Run citrus half around the rim of each of two double old-fashioned glasses. Dip the glasses in the salt to coat the rims. Fill glasses with ice. Combine grapefruit juice and vodka or gin in a cocktail shaker or small pitcher with a few ice cubes; shake or stir to blend. Strain cocktails into glasses, dividing evenly. Top cocktails with a splash of grapefruit seltzer if desired, garnish with grapefruit slices and serve.
