Since we have been confined to our homes, deep-diving into Instagram and boutique real estate websites such as Fantastic Frank has us dreaming of our perfect locations for social distancing. For some, it could be the turquoise waters of Los Cabos, for others, it’s the idyllic country setting of Gotland. This home, located in Hamra on the island’s eastern shore, is a stunning example of modern Swedish design blended into a rural setting.
This three-bedroom house was built in 2014 and has contemporary features such as terrazzo flooring, a lacquered white modern kitchen, and classic 20th-century lighting. These more recent features, though, have been thoughtfully combined with more traditional Swedish rural design – the greige limewash walls, pinewood paneling, and linen bedding. The color palette reflects the home’s earthy surroundings allowing for natural materials to bring interest and texture into the space.
But what would a country home be without extra amenities, such as a pool surrounded by limestone, a back patio landscaped with gravel, and most importantly, a beautifully appointed guest house? While the guest areas offer no frills – closets are replaced by clothing racks – they show that even within simplicity there can be comfort. A cozy bed to sink into, breezy linen sheets, and an idyllic setting to enjoy Sweden’s long summer nights.
