Studio Robert McKinley is the creative force behind many of the most iconic and relevant hospitality venues: Ruschmeyer’s, Sant Ambroeus, GoldBar, and The Surf Lodge, to name a few. With principal Robert McKinley at the helm, fashion and art strongly influence the studio’s designs — there are often unexpected moments that make you pause, or transport you to another world entirely. The designer has really tapped into the aspirational element, beautifully capturing the way people want to live. And with the McKinley Bungalows, people really can live that way… for a weekend, anyway.
In an effort to reimagine the hospitality space, they’ve opened three bungalows in Montauk, NY. They are available for rent on Airbnb, so you can plan a long summer vacation or a quick weekend escape from the city — and there’s a twist. Everything inside is for sale. Whether you fall in love with the linens or have your eye on a larger piece like the ceramic stove, you can make it yours. (Certainly a concept frowned upon in traditional lodging options.)
The third bungalow, Etna, just opened in October. Style wise, it’s a bit of a departure from the first two. The four-bedroom, three-bathroom home is centrally located in a residential neighborhood just two blocks to town and the beach. The slate grey exterior and polished concrete floors have an industrial feel, inspired by the weather bunkers that dot the Montauk coastline. The lower ceilings have a casual vibe, and plush custom sofas, playful Heath tiling in the kitchen and bathrooms, and geometric woven rugs add a bit of bohemian flair to the home.
With COVID-19 changing the way people travel, what a treat to be able to have the boutique hotel experience… without the other guests. Bring your pod and stay awhile! To be honest, you can likely stay as long as your heart desires. When we said everything was for sale, we meant it. Even the bungalow itself is available for purchase.
