In 2006, Stacey Fraser launched her own line of children’s clothing (and, from our perspective, began her empire). This wasn’t a shocking turn of events, however. She’d spent 15 years involved in every aspect of children’s clothing design, working with Ralph Lauren, babyGap, Tommy Hilfiger, and Old Navy. While she loved her corporate career, she wanted the opportunity to spend more time with her daughters… and Pink Chicken New York was born. The line reflected Stacey’s love of of joyful patterns and casual easy dressing. As Pink Chicken gained popularity, the business grew. In 2011, Pink Chicken Tween was hatched… and the line went from one flagship to 2 NYC stores and 1 (just opened!) in LA. Up next? Charleston. We were so impressed by Stacey’s story that we just had to find out how she does it. Read on for an insider’s look at her journey and a hint at her dream collaboration:
MY LIGHTBULB MOMENT:
After my second daughter was born, I realized I just couldn’t go back and work for a big corporation, so I started making dresses for my daughters on my own. When someone introduced me to Stefani Greenfield, founder of Scoop, I showed her my samples and she bought the line on the spot. I knew I had something people might really like!
I CAN’T START MY DAY UNTIL:
I have an iced skim latte in my hand.
Finding the right balance between work and home! Having a creative day at work and still being able to make it to my daughters’ dance recital or soccer game. And success is seeing a little girl walking down the street or playing in the park, wearing Pink Chicken! The best feeling ever!
YOU’LL NEVER SEE ME WITHOUT:
My charm necklace. I have one disc for each person in my family, including our dog Clyde.
MY DREAM COLLABORATION:
I would love to work with my favorites like Dries Van Noten or Chloe but, honestly, working with Target would be SO cool! Being able to get our brand out there at a price point for everyone would be amazing.
THE ONLY PLACE BETTER THAN LA:
New York – City and Hamptons/Amagansett
WHEN I FEEL UNINSPIRED:
I take a walk down NYC streets and people watch, scour through our piles of vintage textiles… go to the beach!
ADVICE I WISH I HAD 5 YEARS AGO:
We have had a lot of bumps along the way for sure but each one I have learned from to make me a better designer, a better businesswoman.
IN 5 YEARS FIND ME:
At my oldest daughter’s high school graduation! I can’t believe I just said that. She will be 13 this fall – it goes SO fast!!
ABOVE ALL ELSE:
Family comes first. Lucky for me my family loves being involved in the business (working in the stores, giving opinions on clothes, doing the photo shoots!) so it becomes a family affair. But nothing is more important to me than my precious girls and supportive husband.
I have to say, this journey creating and growing pink chicken has been such an incredible experience. I feel so, so grateful to all our customers and supporters over the years who have brought our company to life!
