Sacha Dunn and her husband, Edmund Levine, began their career as prop stylists living in Brooklyn. On a trip with their little ones to visit Sacha’s family in Australia, they were doing a load of laundry when the idea hit them. They noticed that in Australia, everyone refills their detergent bottles (as opposed to the American practice of throwing it out and buying a fresh bottle). Sacha wanted to bring this concept back to America, and Common Good was born. They launched full-steam ahead into their new venture, and decided that a bulk refill station would reduce the most packaging waste. They designed an an easy-to-use refill system so consumers could simply refill bottles at designated stations. Since their launch, Common Good products and refill stations are now available in stores across the country, and more recently, they co-branded an exclusive range for West Elm Market.
Not only does Common Good cut down waste, the products are truly “green.” Working with many green chemists and formulators, they decided that Common Good would only use plant or mineral based ingredients and 100 percent pure essential oils. They never, ever use petroleum, chlorine, ammonia, edta, betaines, sulfates or any other ingredients that are of concern. And on top of that, the products smell DELICIOUS and the packaging is gorgeous. This line has totally changed the way we clean! We sat down with Sacha to find out her daily routine, her definition of success, and what she values most:
MY LIGHTBULB MOMENT:
Was on a 2009 trip to Sydney, Australia to visit my parents. We had little kids and were doing tons of laundry. Laundry detergent refills have been in Australia for a long time so we were refilling the detergent bottle over and over. We wanted to do that back home in New York. We were alarmed at the amount of plastic packaging we were recycling each week. This was the solution we were looking for.
I CAN’T START MY DAY UNTIL:
I have coffee, check the weather and wake up the kids.
Being happy. Being able to balance family and work. Doing your best and being proud of what you do.
YOU’LL NEVER SEE ME WITHOUT:
Sadly, my phone. But it is handy that I can step away from work and still be connected.
MY DREAM COLLABORATION:
We’re already doing some dream collaborations! The thing we look for is great people. Working with great people makes everything dreamy.
THE ONLY PLACE BETTER THAN BROOKLYN:
Sydney is pretty great. Better in different ways. I miss the beach.
WHEN I FEEL UNINSPIRED:
I go for a walk. Think about all the great things that have happened, are happening and will happen in the future.
ADVICE I WISH I HAD 5 YEARS AGO:
Oh everything about starting a business!
IN 5 YEARS FIND ME:
Right here, I hope. Working on some creative ideas I have but don’t have time to pursue right now.
ABOVE ALL ELSE:
Kindness, patience, family and friends.
