Denise McGaha is a Dallas based design force to be reckoned with. Known for her affluent clientele, insider access to high-end concierge services for her clients, and deadline driven design solutions, she’s not only influencing interior design, but often times dictating it. In today’s High Point Market “Style Spotter” series, we sat down with Denise to get inspired. We hope you’ll feel as motivated after reading this interview as we are!
WHAT I LOVE MOST ABOUT HIGH POINT MARKET IS:
The ability to spend five days seeing every trend possible, meeting the most talented designers and manufacturers, attending parties with access to top national and international interior designers and architects ALL IN ONE PLACE.
MY MUST-SEE SHOWROOMS AT MARKET ARE:
The Antiques and Design Center – for one-of-a-kinds and amazing antiques from every century. There is something for everyone. Currey and Company for lighting, rugs and furnishings all accompanied by live music and organic foods and signature cocktails. Ask for Bethanne – the PR maven at Currey to show you around. She’s the best. Hickory Chair for curated upholstery and case goods with original art. Tell designers Alexa Hampton, Suzanne Kasler and Mariette Himes Gomez hello – they are all in attendance at market sharing their latest introductions for Hickory Chair and the rooms they personally design to show off their talent. The Hable sisters also share their talent through fabrics on Hickory Chair frames via their Hable Construction textiles.
AS A STYLE SPOTTER, I’M MOST LIKELY TO “SPOT”:
An unexpected piece that really tells a story. There needs to be a little glamour, a little modern or vintage flair, and most importantly it has to be available on a DEADLINE. My clients won’t wait for a backordered item so we always ask to see when it will be available.
WHAT SETS HIGH POINT APART FROM OTHER TRADE SHOWS:
You can focus on market while you are there. I find fewer distractions than in other markets and I go there to WORK. Also, EVERYONE shows in High Point. If you choose one market to attend and want to see the most vendors, High Point is the place to be.
AS A DESIGNER, WHAT I MOST ADMIRE IN A ROOM IS:
The personality of the person living there shining through in the design. Also, I admire the ability to mix patterns in a room. A solid sofa is great, but when you have the guts to upholster a 9-foot sofa in pattern, I am giddy.
MY LIGHT BULB MOMENT:
When I discovered that designing a project on a deadline meant I made money much faster and could check the project off my list allowing for less frustration and a happy client. Win-Win-Win
I CAN’T START MY DAY UNTIL:
I have taken a Bikram yoga class. All stress is gone and I start my day centered.
Ever changing. Sometimes it’s just finding that I remembered to brush my teeth. Other days it’s winning a beautiful project with amazing clients. I celebrate them all.
YOU’LL NEVER SEE ME WITHOUT:
Sharpened pencils. It’s my “thing”. I can’t do any other pencil – has to be wooden and razor sharp.
MY DREAM COLLABORATION:
Lighting and Mirror designs – I already have many of my designs custom made by local artisans but to collaborate with one of my favorite lighting manufacturers would be a dream.
THE ONLY PLACE BETTER THAN DALLAS:
Paris – I feel so at home there and can’t wait to go back in the fall.
WHEN I FEEL UNINSPIRED:
I travel or I go to bed. Sleep is the best cure for the creative block and travel gives me so many great ideas. If I go without travel for more than a few months, I crave it and so do my design projects.
ADVICE I WISH I HAD 5 YEARS AGO:
Be yourself. There is only one you and the unique gifts you have are yours and yours alone. Share them and you will find success. Don’t be a facsimile – be an original.
IN 5 YEARS FIND ME:
Designing projects for amazing clients and collaborating with manufacturers to share my unique talents with the design industry through product design.
ABOVE ALL ELSE:
Failures are often the path to success. Fail as often as you can to learn those lessons that will make you a success.
