Some say happiness is a choice. That may or may not be true, but you can choose Hapi Art. The bright, bold artwork and textiles of Kristi Kohut are guaranteed to put a smile on your face. Named one of the “7 Next-Big-Thing Artists” by Elle Decor, Kristi’s work is available at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago, Minted, One Kings Lane, and more. We had to take a look around her studio and learn more about the woman behind the paintbrush.

Kristi, your studio is gorgeous! Where is it located?
My studio is actually in my home. This is so perfect for me and such a dream because no matter what time of day, I can be in there creating. My studio is on the 2nd floor with Northern and Eastern facing windows. They bring in the most beautiful light, especially in the morning. I just finished putting the finishing touches on it and it is such a dream seeing it come together.

We have to say, there is one wall that particularly stands out.
One wall is covered in this enormous 3D collage piece that I created with hundreds of hand-cut flowers made from my collages. It is like a vertical garden of color and pattern and makes my space feel so happy. There’s also a giant bulletin board framed in a gilded gold frame that I use for collecting inspiration. And on the other wall I had so much fun turning it into a giant gallery wall of work.

In the middle of the room is a giant white work table where I spend the most time creating. The table has 16 shelves that are each filled with an acrylic tray loaded with all of my materials. I love working with different kinds of materials, so you will see everything from art markers, to jars of mixed acrylic paint, oil pastels, soft pastels, pigment, glass beads and more.
