In our new series, “5 Minutes With,” we’ll be chatting with our favorite designers, tastemakers, bloggers, and success stories to find out what makes them tick. Today, we’re excited to feature textile designer and artist Rebecca Atwood:
MY LIGHT BULB MOMENT:
I had been thinking a lot about what I was going to do next in my career, and wasn’t finding any jobs in the market that excited me. I needed something big to dive into. After doing a workshop I realized I actually had the answer – to start my own line while working as a freelance consultant and designer. I had been making the idea of starting my own line so much more complicated than it needed to be. Once I realized I could start small and local I knew I had all of the tools I needed to get going.
I CAN’T START MY DAY UNTIL:
I’ve had a cup of French pressed coffee.
Really going for it! If you don’t try you’ll never know, and if you try and fail you’ve learned something valuable that will bring you to the next step.
YOU’LL NEVER SEE ME WITHOUT:
Slightly crazy hair – it has a mind of its own.
MY DREAM COLLABORATION:
Cisco Brothers, Astier de Villatte, The Rug Company, Farrow and Ball – there are so many.
THE ONLY PLACE BETTER THAN BROOKLYN:
Cape Cod. I grew up there and it’s such a big part of me. I love the ocean and can really recharge there.
WHEN I FEEL UNINSPIRED:
It means I need a break! I go for a walk in Prospect Park, paint in my sketchbook, cook something, or even take a nap.
ADVICE I WISH I HAD 5 YEARS AGO:
Stop worrying so much. It will all work out, and you don’t have to have it all perfectly planned. Ok let’s be honest, I still need that advice today!
IN 5 YEARS, FIND ME:
Working in a real studio space (not my second bedroom!), painting, expanding my line to include new categories of home products, and enjoying life with my husband and maybe even a baby or two.
ABOVE ALL ELSE:
Do what feels right for you.
