When it comes to buying furniture, fair and transparent pricing is one of our top priorities… only second to style. Fortunately, there’s Sixpenny. The direct-to-consumer home furnishings brand was founded by Jonathan Allen and Kevin Lehrer in 2017, and quickly transformed the experience of online furniture shopping.
Though it’s a relatively young company, the co-founders have actually worked together for many years, first crossing paths at TRG Group (the company behind Victorinox Swiss Army’s bag and travel goods line) and then co-founding 5 Horizons Group, a company that initially focused on providing prominent brands with design and operations services before expanding into global wholesale licensing. Soon, the duo would broaden their product ecosystem and licensing model to include furniture and home accessories. Needless to say, their combined passion and knowledge of design and manufacturing makes them the perfect pair to overhaul the industry.
Sixpenny creates heirloom-quality pieces, blending craftsmanship and beauty while keeping value at the forefront. They use high-quality materials, like natural and durable linens and Italian leathers, real down-feather cushions, and hand-crafted solid wood frames. It’s the epitome of relaxed luxury.
The pair is next up in our #5MinutesWith series, sharing what sparked the idea for Sixpenny and how they define success:
MY LIGHTBULB MOMENT:
We worked some of our longest days leading up to the launch of Sixpenny. However, we were always excited to get back at it the next day. That was the moment I realized it was a true passion project for both Jon and I and that’s always a great place to start a business. There have been some challenging days since we launched in 2017 but that fire has carried us through.
I CAN’T START MY DAY UNTIL:
Taking my dog Oscar out. – Jon
A good work-life balance where Jon and I would get to fully pursue our passions at work while also still dedicating equal energy to caring for our families and our own well-being. – Kevin
YOU’LL NEVER SEE ME WITHOUT:
My sunglasses (the sun shines bright in the mountains) and S’well water bottle. – Jon
Axel Vervoordt. He’s a maestro of the relaxed luxury aesthetic that has so massively inspired us. – Jon
THE ONLY CITY BETTER THAN DENVER:
Hard to pick! We travel a lot for work and every place brings us a different inspiration and creativity. Tokyo for the food and Provence for antique shopping are a few examples that come to mind. – Jon
WHEN I FEEL UNINSPIRED:
I take a break. I get nourishment from either a book, a show, a run or whatever feels right for the moment, and start fresh the next day. – Kevin
ADVICE I WISH I HAD 5 YEARS AGO:
Trust your instincts. Don’t do anything just because it’s how everyone else does it. – Kevin
IN 5 YEARS, FIND ME:
Building my own mountain home with custom Sixpenny furniture. – Jon
ABOVE ALL ELSE:
If you give it your best regardless of the outcome, you’ll have peace within. At the end of the day, that’s all we can ask for. – Kevin
