There’s a reason we’ve mentioned Decorist on this website so many times — it’s simply brilliant. Founded by Gretchen Hansen in 2012, Decorist is a service that makes great design accessible to everyone. As a mom, Gretchen understands the value of time and set out to build a platform that made it easy to design a home within one’s budget and style… and do so quickly. Gretchen has led the company to success, including the recent acquirement by Bed Bath & Beyond. Today, she’s answering our rapid-fire Q&A. Get ready to be inspired:
MY LIGHTBULB MOMENT:
I was remodeling my house in San Francisco and found these two amazing chairs at a favorite vintage store in the city—they were bright pink tufted velvet, Milo Baughman from the 70s—sublime. I bought them on the spot and dragged them into my office. To my dismay, they looked terrible! I called a friend who was a designer she said “send me photos”—I sent her photos and a few days later she came over with a rug, a table and some accessories”—poof-my room was beautiful! At that moment, I realized that anyone could get great design help by simply sending photos and giving a little info about themselves. Decorist was born and we haven’t looked back.
I CAN’T START MY DAY UNTIL:
French press coffee, using dark French roast beans—freshly ground. It’s a must. My whole family, even the dog, knows this!
Having a positive impact on those around you—whether it’s through inspiring others, leading others or just offering support, it’s all about the impact you have on people.
YOU’LL NEVER SEE ME WITHOUT:
My laptop and lip balm. Yep.
MY DREAM COLLABORATION:
Kelly Wearstler for Decorist. I think she is a genius, and I am constantly inspired by her work and perspective. We send Modern Glamour to our designers as a bonus! To me, it’s the decorating bible.
THE ONLY PLACE BETTER THAN SAN FRANCISCO:
Sonoma wine country—one of the most beautiful countrysides around. I love the contrast of the long symmetrical lines of the planted grape vines with the wild golden hills. I am so saddened by what happened there with the fires, but know that the people there are strong and will rebuild.
WHEN I FEEL UNINSPIRED:
I travel. It’s important to get off the beaten path and go to unexpected places. In the last couple of years, some of the places we’ve been include Belize, the Cotswolds, Amsterdam, and Tanzania. They were all inspiring for different reasons and help to fuel the creative spirit.
ADVICE I WISH I HAD 5 YEARS AGO:
Fear is your friend. I don’t really believe you should do something everyday that scares you like some say, but you should listen to and understand your fears. They often can be a guide to things you should think about doing or trying.
IN 5 YEARS FIND ME:
Doing what I am doing—helping thousands of people create a home they love, quickly and easily.
ABOVE ALL ELSE:
Passion, Integrity, Compassion.
