Rebecca Schoneveld discovered her love for fashion at an early age. Her sewing skills developed in her mother’s sewing studio, as she reconstructed thrift store finds and crafted costumes for her dance company, later going on to launch her first clothing line. After nearly 10 years in the contemporary New York fashion industry, Rebecca took the earnings from her small Etsy store and officially launched her eponymous bridal line in April of 2013. The line is romantic, and elegantly minimal. Her flagship boutique on 3rd Avenue has become the destination for the modern Brooklyn bride. Even if you’re not getting married anytime soon, you’ll surely enjoy the design. Today, Rebecca tackles our “5 Minutes With” series, sharing her love of design and the secrets to her success:

MY LIGHTBULB MOMENT:
I had been forced to close my first line of clothing when the recession hit in 2008/2009, and shortly thereafter I took a job at a sweet little boutique in my Brooklyn neighborhood which allowed me a lot of time to just decompress and meditate on what to do next. I kept just trying to focus on how to work in fashion more simply, from a place of more love and honesty, and with a sustainable business model. One day walking home, I just had this vision of a boutique where brides could come and get an old world atelier experience but in a really rad, modern space. How cool would it be, I thought, to offer brides all these interchangeable components of gowns and fabric options that would allow them to get a locally-made custom wedding gown with a quick turnaround and minimal stress? It took a few more years and a LOT of work to actually get the pieces in place and for it all to grow into what it is today, but that original vision is definitely what keeps us going still!

I CAN’T START MY DAY UNTIL:
I pour my cup of coffee, climb back into bed and read my daily meditation. Usually my 2 little boys are climbing all over the place and making messes while I do so, but I have to get that 10 minutes of peace (and caffeine!) otherwise I feel off all day!

SUCCESS IS:
Truly loving what you do every day and affecting positive change in the lives of people around you.

YOU’LL NEVER SEE ME WITHOUT:
You will rarely see me without red lipstick and my black leather jacket. They just work with everything!

MY DREAM COLLABORATION:
Oooh, maybe to do a fine jewelry collaboration with Anna Sheffield. Her work is TO DIE FOR!

THE ONLY PLACE BETTER THAN BROOKLYN:
I LOVE Brooklyn, so that’s tough. But perhaps Tulum, Mexico… Or Pai, Thailand. I am a sucker for warm sunshine, hammocks, and fresh coconut water.

WHEN I FEEL UNINSPIRED:
I get on Pinterest or the Met’s website and look at vintage fashion. Endless!

ADVICE I WISH I HAD 5 YEARS AGO:
Don’t be afraid to be yourself. Oh, and hire a good book keeper early on and pass all that kind of stuff on to her!

IN 5 YEARS FIND ME:
Totally yoga-toned and chilling in a yurt in Nicaragua (or the like) part of the time and the rest of the time kicking ass in the bridal world, having an evening wear line, multiple boutiques around the country, and a hit reality TV show. Hey why not?

ABOVE ALL ELSE:
Put yourself out there authentically and treat others how you want to be treated.
