In March, many of us were sent home from the office “for two weeks.” Now, Thanksgiving is just around the corner and the reality of the home office is still going strong. We have to ask: are you still working from the dining table on an uncomfortable (but cute!) chair?

Herman Miller, the leader in high performance task chairs, is here to save your home office… and your back. We recently had a virtual chat with Debbie Propst, President of Herman Miller Retail, about the brand’s expansion into brick & mortar (even in 2020!) and the benefits of a high-performance task chair.

“We’re in a time where many find themselves sedentary, working from home, sitting down for more hours than ever before, and the dining room chair just isn’t cutting it anymore,” said Propst. Herman Miller’s performance seating is designed with everything from posture to blood flow in mind, and is backed by decades of ergonomic research, experimentation, and analysis. For example, the iconic Aeron Chair allows for the perfect sit (chest open, shoulders back, pelvis tilted slightly forward) while the Embody Chair will easily adjust to the spine’s natural curve.

An ergonomic chair is the type of purchase you want to try before you buy, and Herman Miller clued in on that pretty quickly this year. “The public deserves healthier alternatives and they’re searching for better solutions online. We’ve heard from customers that they want a way to test our products in person before making the investment,” Propst explained. Though many retailers have shifted completely away from brick & mortar, Herman Miller Retail is coming off of its strongest fiscal quarter to date. The first Herman Miller Store is now open at Westfield Century City in Los Angeles, while a second location is set to debut at The Shops at Hudson Yards in New York City this week. Additional locations are planned to open across the country in 2021.

At each store, strict Covid-19 safety protocols are in place, and guests can test and compare each chair in person — even working on a laptop or tablet to compare to your own office. Performance Specialists are on-site to help highlight the different features (like pressure distribution or backrest adjustments), so you can rest assured you’ve chosen the right chair for your body and your home. And if you don’t live in Los Angeles or New York, you can compare key features online or chat with their staff.

As many businesses are making the tough decision to continue a work-from-home model, it’s time to give your dining chairs a rest and upgrade your seating situation. Speaking from experience, your back will thank you later.
