Melanie Mount and Kelly Bedford Willrich are two former merchandising execs from Pottery Barn, with over twenty years of experience in the industry at brands like Ralph Lauren and Restoration Hardware, that decided that the concept of “to the trade” only was unfair and limiting. They started Well Made Home in Marin County, California to meet the growing demand of customers like us that want access to custom pieces and fabrics.
At Well Made Home everything is truly custom. In most of the other brands you are only able to modify the lengths or upholstery of furniture. In this case, anything can be created! And to add on an extra bonus, it’s manufactured in California. Melanie and Kelly’s workshop offers custom drapes, furniture, and pillows along with design services to help guide you along the way. You have access to 20 designer only fabric brands such as Madeleine Weinrib and Peter Dunham, which opens up so many possibilities.
For those who want instant satisfaction, Melanie and Kelly also opened up the Cushion Shop — a little boutique in Marin Country Mart where you can shop pillows and other chic accessories. “Customers come in for a ‘cushion’ (the British term for “throw pillow”) and discover we offer so much more: we like to think of The Cushion Shop as a custom furniture shop masquerading a charming little shop where one can buy throw pillows,” they explained.
The whole experience is about making it easy and fun — fabrics are organized by color, instead of by designer and they help you find your style and create designs that feel unique to you. Most importantly, they are there with you all along the way, from the design process to the in-person styling and install where they’ll even come fluff up your pillows and steam your curtains.
