Welcome to our official Art Series with UGallery! Over the next few weeks, we’ll be chatting with UGallery’s Gallery Director and Co-Founder, Alex Farkas, to get an insider’s perspective on building your art collection. From what you need to know before you buy to styling pieces once you own them, Alex will be guiding you through every step of the process! And really, Alex is an absolute pro. His mother owned an art gallery, so he’s been surrounded by art his entire life. He graduated with degrees in Art History and Entrepreneurship at the University of Arizona before launching UGallery to immediate accolades. Today, the online gallery represents 500 emerging artists from around the globe, and has 7,000 unique pieces available – with about 100 new pieces added each week! Even celebs like Clint Eastwood, Melanie Griffith, and Yoko Ono are fans of UGallery artists!
Today, we asked Alex to do a little trendspotting for us. He’s sharing his top art predictions for 2015. Here are the trends to watch (and embrace) this year:
PEOPLE WILL BE BARING IT ALL WITH NUDE ART:
Currently, nude art tops the list of subject matter most commonly searched on UGallery. For the past few years, people added comfort and warmth to their homes with pieces that featured animals and bird’s nests. Social and economic climates have changed for the better, inspiring buyers to look for art that offers intrigue, sophistication and wall power. Small nudes, particularly classical or impressionist-styled pieces, look elegant in intimate spaces such as bedrooms and bathrooms. Large scale, pop-inspired pieces command attention in entryways and common areas. Expect to see lots more skin in 2015!
BACHELORS WILL BE DECORATING WITH MORE ORIGINAL ART:
This year, we are witnessing more searches for art for bachelor pads than any other decor type. The modern man has taste in fine clothes, good wine, and even original art! This shows not only in search data but also in sales–men now account for nearly half of all UGallery customers. Art makes us proud of where we live and work, provides good conversation starters, and keeps us thinking.
EXPECT TO SEE MORE TURQUOISE:
Right now, clients search for turquoise art more than any other color. It’s versatile and can take many forms, from light and subtle to bright and dramatic. I see people using turquoise art to bring light and warmth into their spaces. Look for it as a complement to woods, silvers, metallics, beiges and browns.
LARGE-SCALE ABSTRACTION WILL DRAW CROWDS:
Abstract art stands as the most searched style on UGallery, outnumbering classical art six to one. From gallery walls to the aisles of the world’s art fairs, abstraction seems as alive as ever. Customers are looking for large-scale pieces that bring energy and emotion into their space. Abstract art moves across many different styles, offering the opportunity to make a unique statement that also fits the decor of the room.
OIL PAINTINGS WILL CONTINUE TO DOMINATE THE WALL:
Regardless of high tech new art media or the trend of the moment, oil (and acrylic) paintings continue to be the top searched and purchased mediums on UGallery. People usually buy art with a long-term and practical mindset, so most clients gravitate towards more traditional styles and subject matter. We’ve been admiring and decorating with oil paintings for hundreds of years, so I expect this will continue for at least a few more!
