Caitlin Murray, Founder and Interior Designer of Black Lacquer Design, says “I’m hoping to see a more universal and enthusiastic embrace of eclecticism. Lately, it seems like people are recategorizing elements that were previously considered somewhat specific or obscure as classic staples. Interiors that artfully blend various eras and styles feel fresh and timeless in a way that a blanket approach to the going trend can never achieve.”

Sabrina Speer of D Squared Interiors says, “I always love seeing art that is personal to a client, relates to them in some small way, or has a story behind it—rather than a generic choice.  Our clients in Los Feliz had art made by her father, a large photo of an old view, and this wonderful painting by Jason Koharik, showing her husband when he was working in craft services.”

Patrick Ediger says, ”There’s been an incredible resurgence of smaller, independent makers and hand-crafters that’s ushering in an age of ‘Arts and Crafts Nouveau’, with an appreciation for local artisanship and naturally-derived materials. I used a fabulous example of this in a recent project, a bench by Peg Woodworking – it’s a fusion of modern Scandinavian design with traditional Native American weaving and it’s so, so gorgeous!”

Designer Kristen Pena couldn’t limit herself to just one design trend. She says, “In 2019 I’m excited to see more steel and glass used in kitchens, on cabinets, shower enclosures and room dividers. These materials, whether vintage and repurposed or newly constructed, add elegance and interest to any room.”

Also says Kristen, “I’m excited to see more and more handmade tile with drastic variation and irregularity. We will see this in a range of neutral colors, but also in fun earthy pops of color like greens, rusts and ochres.”

Sarah Zames of General Assembly says, “We are looking forward to seeing more depth and layers being added into projects through the use of pattern and texture.  I’m looking forward to seeing people relax and have a little more fun with wallcoverings, tile, stone and paint colors.”

In their recent Hamptons project, General Assembly used Murals Wallpaper in Vase of Flowers with millwork wall panels below painted in Farrow and Ball Studio Green.  The desk in the photos is a custom designed white oak desk with marble inlays.  On the desk is a custom lamp designed by our studio, called the Slab Lamp and a marble book stand called the Third Eye Vessel by Chen Chen + Kai Williams.
