The last name Missoni is practically synonymous with color and pattern, so a children’s décor line is a perfect fit. Margherita Missoni for Pottery Barn Kids, just released today, celebrates the spirit of childhood with over 50 pieces for nursery, bedroom, and playroom. There are even a few pieces we’d like to steal for ourselves! We spoke to Margherita to learn more about the collection and designing for children.
What inspired your collection with Pottery Barn Kids?
I find inspiration everywhere – the people I meet, the places I go and the things I see. It’s important for me to make the most of every opportunity and to make the effort to immerse myself in these different experiences. I express myself through art and design, so my work is imbued with all these experiences. Margherita Kids, my childrenswear collection, was born out of my love for my two young boys. They inspire me to create timeless and unique items that can be enjoyed by children and parents alike. I’ve taken this same design approach to the capsule I’ve designed with Pottery Barn Kids. I want to create joyful, playful pieces that encourage self-expression and inspire children to explore their individuality.
Spoken like a mom! How has having children changed your design style?
I most enjoy having fun with prints and motifs, mixing and matching colors, textures, and patterns. The unexpected is often the most interesting. This is the approach I take to style — whether in my home or in the clothes I wear. I also love child-sized furniture and I strongly believe that it’s important for children to be surrounded by furniture that’s both approachable and size-appropriate. Also, I have created storage pieces in this collection that will certainly help me to quickly conceal the mess they create, so I’ll be incorporating the Diamond and Ombre Baskets [into their rooms] for sure.
