This post was created in partnership with Kohler.
Earlier this year, Bay Area designer Lauren Nelson embarked on a pretty personal project – the renovation of her own bathroom in San Anselmo, CA. Lauren moved her family of four from a small apartment in San Francisco’s Mission District to a house, and was happy to finally call her “dream house” home.
But the main floor bathroom left quite a bit to be desired. We wrote about Lauren’s frustrations – and inspiration! – as the project was just getting started. (You can check out the post here.) In summary, the space needed to be two things: exceptionally beautiful and perfectly functional. Lauren and her husband share it with their 2 young girls, and it’s also the bathroom any guests use. Form needed to meet function in a big way!
Lauren partnered with Kohler to design a bathroom that would work well for her family yet still fit her California-cool aesthetic. She first used the Kohler website to get inspired. IDEAS has an extensive collection of resources with endless mood boards and galleries to fit any style. Lauren wanted a mix of modern and vintage, a subtle color palette, and a big emphasis on texture and wabi-sabi – her favorite design term which is a Japanese philosophy rooted in the idea of simplicity and imperfection.
As you’ll see in the video, the space came to life beautifully. The floor and wall tile is handmade in Morocco and very tactile, along with Kohler’s Artist Editions Sartorial sink. The Artifacts faucet and shower fixtures have a vintage feel, tying Lauren’s vision together. She used the Artifacts sink spout and lever handles, with the matching showerhead and handshower.
The traditional fixtures really balance the sleek look of the vanity, Tea for Two tub, and medicine cabinet. The tub was a big highlight for Lauren, who loved the clean lines, rounded rectangular shape, and that it’s made of cast iron – which has much more durability & strength than the previous acrylic tub. And for the toilet, Lauren selected Kohler’s Kathryn toilet with AquaPiston flush technology. This toilet is especially great for Lauren and her family, as the concealed trapway makes for super easy cleaning. It also has a cleansing toilet seat, which uses heated water and adds the benefit of personal cleansing to the existing toilet.
Kohler’s breadth of product allowed the designer to coordinate everything – faucets, accessories, showering, and finishes to express her personal style. We love that she now has a bathroom that will last for years, make her happy, and function better than ever!
