In our April 2015 issue, the home of Orange County designer Kim Rodosky graced the cover. The space was a perfect blend of ‘grown up’ design with family-friendly elements. And in classic SoCal form, the sprawling backyard was just as fabulous as the house itself. In partnership with Eric and Chris Fenmore of Garden Studio Design in Corona del Mar, Kim worked to make the outdoor space a relaxing oasis that could host large groups.
Much like she did indoors, Kim focused on creating separate areas where everyone could have their own spot to hang out – a trampoline hidden by thoughtfully planted trees; a playhouse on the hill with a path for running around and extra lawn space for water gun fights; a fireplace on the main patio, a fire pit by the pool house. In this backyard, the kids are happy. But don’t fret, the adults are too! After all, plenty of seating means great conversation paired with California wine on warm summer evenings.
Finally, the show-stopper – the pool house. Kim designed it so the kids would have a space all their own that was separate from the main house. With bunk beds, TV, and a small kitchenette, it has become the headquarters for weekend adventures. Kim explained, “I love that my kids like to be at our house on the weekend. It has given us the opportunity to really get to know their friends so they begin to feel like part of our family.”
