Mountain Shadows in Paradise Valley, AZ is a property with its roots in 1950s modernism. First opened in 1959, it was a hotspot during the buzzy days when Scottsdale and Paradise Valley served as Hollywood’s second home. Mountain Shadows hosted Bob Hope, Lucille Ball, Elizabeth Taylor, and Sammy David, among others.
After many years, the hotel eventually closed and was demolished in 2014. Westroc, the hospitality team behind area favorites Sanctuary Camelback Mountain and The Hotel Valley Ho, decided the property should be given a second life. The result is a new resort, built from the ground up but with design details that point to the original hotel’s architecture. Amber Anderson, director of design for Westroc, says, “Mountain Shadows retains the spirit of the original resort with a design that is very modern for its time, floor-to-ceiling glass throughout, and a layout centered around capturing the incredible Camelback Mountain views. While the building is extremely contemporary, the interior blends décor that is modern and mid-century inspired. The butterfly roofs on several buildings are also a nod to mid-century architecture.”
The only piece that remains of the historic building, however, are the original concrete blocks designed by mid-century modern Valley architect Ralph Haver. Still, details like the sunken ‘Living Room’ public space with its central fireplace are strong references to the past. Amber says, “We designed the ‘Living Room’ with community in mind, wanting our guests to feel comfortable whether working on a laptop while enjoying a cup of coffee or meeting friends for evening cocktails. The variety of comfortable seating and workspaces gives the space a very cozy and residential feel, while still modern.”
The tallest building in picturesque Paradise Valley at three stories, the building surrounds a multi-level pool and a greenspace that both look out to Camelback Mountain, a local landmark. For those who really fall in love with Mountain Shadows, the property also has 42 condominiums that have access to all of the hotel’s amenities.
