Commune is a design firm that spans an impressive array of disciplines – architecture, interior design, graphic design, product design, and brand management. Led by principals Roman Alonso and Steven Johanknecht, the firm recently finished their second project with developers Claret West, called El Centro for its location in the center of Hollywood.
A multi-building residential complex, Commune collaborated with the architecture firm Van Tilburg, Banvard & Soderberghon the buildings’ exterior façade design as well as the interior materials for apartment units and resident amenity spaces. The team’s goal was to create a cohesive cluster of buildings that work well together but with distinctive design details and color for each.
Thus, the building on the corner of Hollywood and Argyle is inspired by the historic Bradbury Building in downtown LA and features saturated color reminiscent of legendary architects Ricardo Legorreta and Luis Barragan inside. “The overall color palette and finishes of the buildings are inspired by colors of southern California and the earth, with more intensity and vibrancy for a distinctive statement in the urban Hollywood location.”
