In a flatiron building in the heart of San Francisco, Proper Hotel recently opened their fourth location. Like the sister hotels in LA, Austin, and Santa Monica, San Francisco Proper Hotel is an ode to the city that surrounds it. In this case, that means high-tech service in a historic building that previously was a hotel! The first step though was stripping away the building’s crumbling facade to reveal Beaux-Arts beauty beneath.
The hotel’s design was a collaboration between veteran hotel developer The Kor Group and world-renowned interior designer Kelly Wearstler. The historic lobby was painstakingly restored by local artisans, who employed centuries-old techniques to brilliantly showcase its accumulated history. Now it’s a riot of color, with patterned textiles, handcrafted furniture, and art absolutely everywhere. The hotel’s 131 rooms are just as fun, though a bit more monochromatic to aid in a restful night. “While carefully preserving the original elements of this classified landmark, we looked to bring something new to San Francisco by collaging a reimagining of past, present and future,” said Wearstler. “The spirit of pre-modernist European influence, hand-selected vintage furnishings, and works by local artists are all part of the warm, inviting design mix.”
